Space Wolves leap off the painting table

Another commission completed. Something different this time, an all mounted Space Marine Space Wolf force. I haven’t painted any Space Marine chapter other than Ultramarines and Imperial Fists in a long time, so it was a nice change to have these greys on the palette.

The client wanted the miniatures to be close to Games Workshop’s studio colors with the exception that the wolves were to be painted in blue/greys rather than the typical browns. The bases were to be snow-covered granite. All the miniatures were to be painted to our ‘Standard level’.

A little blood was added to some of the miniature’s bases to break up the grey and white. I had the chance to try Games Workshop’s ‘Citadel Texture: Astrogranite’ to paint and texture the base grey prior to putting snow cover on the ground. The texture paint itself I suppose could be useful when painting the surfaces of wall for scenery but really I’m not a fan. I prefer to mix some sand or larger rocks into a PVA glue and then paint the surface when dry. Works out that I have more control over the type of texture and it’s a lot cheaper.

Here is the end results:
