I have just completed two magnificent Warhammer Fantasy Dwarf Lords, one carried aloft by loyal Shieldbearers and one on foot ready for battle. Both are painted to display Level 5 quality with full non-metallic metal techniques, bringing every piece of armour and gold trimmings to life.
This impressive duo consists of:
- Dwarf Lord on Shieldbearers: A majestic centrepiece showing the lord carried into battle by his most trusted warriors
- Dwarf Lord on Foot: A commanding presence ready to lead from the front lines in the ranks
Together, these models create a powerful display of Dwarfen leadership and martial prowess, perfect for collectors or as the centerpiece of an army.
Display Level 5 Quality
Both models were completed to our Display Level 5 – our highest tier of painting quality reserved for display pieces and army centrepieces. At this level, every surface receives meticulous attention with advanced techniques applied throughout. This is the level I enjoy painting the most, as I can focus on the miniatures as if I were painting traditional art on canvas, such as the focus of light, use of appropriate colour shades and where each model becomes a little masterpiece.
Non-Metallic Metal Excellence
The defining technical achievement of this commission is the extensive NMM (Non-Metallic Metal) work applied to all armour surfaces:
Gold: Painted with careful colour transitions to simulate the way light plays across reflective golden surfaces, creating the illusion of lustrous metal without using metallic paints. The warm highlights and rich shadows give the gold a regal, polished appearance befitting Dwarven royalty.
Metal Armour: Steel and iron armour pieces showcase cool toned NMM techniques, with sharp contrast between light and shadow creating the appearance of hard, reflective metal. Each plate, rivet, and edge is carefully rendered to enhance the three-dimensional quality of the armour.
The NMM approach creates a painterly, dramatic effect that photographs beautifully and makes these pieces truly stand out on display.
Mountain Realm Bases
While the painting follows tradition, the basing adds atmospheric storytelling:
- Rocky mountain terrain establishing these lords in their natural highland domain
- Snow covering creates a cold, windswept atmosphere that suggests high-altitude fortresses and mountain passes
The snowy bases provide a beautiful contrast to the warm golds and rich colours of the armour while grounding these figures in the harsh mountain kingdoms they defend.
Fit for a King
These Dwarf Lords now stand ready to take their place in a display cabinet or lead an army to glory. Whether viewed in a display or the centrepiece of a Warhammer Fantasy army, they represent the highest of what miniature painting I can paint for my clients.
