I completed this Horus Heresy character commission: Jago Sevatarion, the formidable First Captain of the VIII Legion Night Lords. This imposing figure has been brought to life at our Level 4 high-quality standard, capturing both the grim aesthetic of the Night Lords Legion and the sinister presence of one of the Heresy’s most fearsome warriors.
Prince of Crows
Sevatar stands as one of the most iconic characters in the Horus Heresy narrative, and this magnificent sculpt from Games Workshop does justice to his fearsome reputation. For this commission, I followed the classic Night Lords color scheme, rendering his power armor in deep midnight blue with carefully applied highlights to create depth and definition across the ceramic plates.
The gold trim and decorative elements received special attention, with multiple layers of metallic paints and washes to achieve a rich, battle-worn finish that contrasts beautifully with the dark armor. These elements not only break up the deep blue but also emphasize the baroque and menacing design elements that define the Night Lords aesthetic.
Terror Tactics Made Manifest
Perhaps the most distinctive and disturbing feature of Sevatar’s appearance is the flayed skin stretched across portions of his armor. I rendered these grisly trophies with careful attention to texture and color, creating a realistic appearance of bloodied skin that has been stretched and preserved across the ceramite plates.
Small details like stitching and areas of dried blood add to the unsettling realism of these elements, enhancing the narrative impact of the model without overwhelming the overall composition. These touches help convey the brutality of the Night Lords Legion and Sevatar’s own merciless approach to warfare.
Dramatic Display Base
The model comes with an impressive display base featuring metal stairs and a fallen White Scars Marine – a narrative element that adds considerable drama to the piece. I treated this base as an integral part of the composition rather than a mere support for the main figure.
The stairs were painted with careful attention to the metallic texture and weathering, creating a realistic environment that grounds the scene. The fallen White Scars Marine received the same level of detail as the main figure, with his distinctive white armor rendered with appropriate battle damage and blood effects to tell the story of his defeat at Sevatar’s hands. This narrative element creates a powerful visual contrast between the pristine white of the loyalist and the midnight blue of the traitor.
