I’m excited to share our latest commission from the hauntingly beautiful world of Kingdom Death: Monster. For this project, we’ve completed the imposing Lion God and a band of nine Survivors, all painted to our Level 4 high-quality standard.
The Lion God: Regal Terror
The centerpiece of this commission is undoubtedly the Lion God, one of Kingdom Death’s most majestic and terrifying monsters. This sculpt perfectly captures the game’s unique aesthetic—blending beauty and horror in equal measure.
I approached the Lion God with careful attention to texture contrasts, from the smooth, polished quality of the creature’s mask to the organic, flowing mane. The pale flesh and bloody paws create a striking canvas against which the darker elements stand out dramatically.
The Survivors: Desperate Hope
Accompanying the Lion God are nine Survivors, each with their unique equipment and personality. These fragile humans represent the last vestiges of humanity in the nightmarish world of Kingdom Death, and I wanted their appearance to reflect both their vulnerability and their determination.
Each Survivor received individual attention to ensure they stood out as distinct characters while maintaining cohesion as a group. Their ragged clothing, improvised armour, and desperate weapons tell the story of their struggle against the darkness.
Lantern Lighting Effects
A defining feature of this commission is the atmospheric object source lighting (OSL) effects from the lanterns. In the world of Kingdom Death, these lanterns represent both sanctuary and peril—the only light in an endless darkness, yet also beacons that attract terrifying entities.
I created these lighting effects using multiple layers of translucent glazes, building up the illumination gradually to achieve a realistic glow that spills across nearby surfaces. The warm amber light creates a stark contrast against the predominantly cool palette of the models, heightening the sense of tension and drama that defines the Kingdom Death aesthetic.
Level 4 High-Quality Standard
All models in this commission were completed to our Level 4 high-quality standard, which includes:
- Advanced color blending and smooth transitions
- Detailed highlighting and volumetric lighting
- Specialised techniques like object source lighting
- Careful attention to textural differences
- Cohesive color palette across the entire set
- Extra detail work on faces and focal points
These techniques combine to create models that are not just gaming pieces but display-worthy miniatures that capture the unique atmosphere of Kingdom Death.
Ready for the Nightmare
These models are now ready to take their place in the client’s collection, bringing the haunting world of Kingdom Death to life on the gaming table. Whether facing off against each other in the game’s brutal encounters or displayed together as a striking diorama, these pieces embody the dark beauty that makes Kingdom Death such a compelling setting.
